The placement of portals usually makes the distance you need to travel fairly short, especially if you open the portals to new areas as soon as you are able. When you lose all your hearts, you are transported back to the witch's hut and some of your inventory is dropped where you were standing. You can always craft a Hearthseed to return to your home area in the game, if you run out of ingredients for it you can craft 1 anyway so that you don't get stuck. The locations and requirements for crafting ingredients are also clearly visible, so (hopefully) the player is never in the dark as to where to find something. For example, the player has an infinite inventory, so they don't have to mess with space management, they're free to pick up whatever they see. We tried to streamline a lot of things to make collecting and crafting as painless as possible. I think crafting games have to walk a fine line between fun meditative gameplay, and wasting a player's time (and that line will be different for each player). But over time, we had to cut some of those mechanics and lean more on the narrative aspects to carry the gameplay.
